Systems 101

Thinking about building a custom one-off exhaust system for your vehicle? Below is a rundown of key considerations to bear in mind when designing a true dual exhaust system, most of these points are also applicable to single-pipe systems.

1. Header Collector Ball Flange Kits: Replaces 3-bolt flanges with a leak free, gasketless connection that also improves ground clearance.
2. Balance Pipe (H-pipe and Scavenger Pipe): Balances the pressure of the exhaust pulses between the cylinder banks. This results in an increase in power, torque, and additional sound reduction. Can also reduce the drone associated with non-balanced exhaust systems. Scavenger X pipes can help improve torque by increasing the pulse velocity at lower rpm.
3. Pipe Size: Selecting the appropriate diameter for the exhaust pipes can have a dramatic effect on the overall sound control and performance of the system.. Larger pipes can enhance airflow and power, but too large may sacrifice torque at lower engine speeds and too small will crate a restriction. Find that sweet spot.
4. Muffler Selection: Choose mufflers that align with your desired sound profile, exhaust tip exit placement, pipe diameter, and performance objectives. Different muffler designs (e.g., chambered, straight-through) produce varying tones and affect exhaust flow differently. Contact our tech line for assistance in selecting the proper muffler. Our kits often use mufflers specifically designed for that application.
5. System Hangers: Exhaust hangers are crucial for properly supporting the exhaust system. They help to secure the pipes, mufflers, and other components in place, preventing excessive movement and maintaining proper clearance for the vehicle's undercarriage and other components.
6. Resonators: Resonators play a vital role in refining the sound profile of an exhaust system, especially when dealing with unwanted frequencies or drone. They act as acoustic chambers designed to attenuate specific frequencies, helping to balance and shape the exhaust note.
7. Stainless Tips / Exit Location: Stainless tips allow the enthusiast to personalize the appearance of the exhaust system. Many of our dual-out truck systems allow for two different exit locations.
